Costa Rican cuisine is extremely rich and varied, from the freshest vegetables and tropical fruits to the most delicious dishes created from succulent shellfish.
The most popular local specialties are "Casado", a dish of rice, beans, plantain, meat and salad, "Chorreadas", thick corn tortillas and "Empanadas" (pasties) filled with cheese, beans or meat.
Other very popular dishes in the region are Tamales, rice with chicken, "Picadillo de Arracache" (minced arracache root with pork or veal) and "Papa con Carne" (meat and potato stew).
There are numerous restaurants in Costa Rica, serving not only regional culinary specialties but also specializing in international cuisine.
