Puerto Plata
Places to see
El Corcovado: Puerto Plata also has a Corcorvado, similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro: 16-m high statue of Christ, standing on the mountain known as the Loma Isabel de Torres, at the summit of the Pico Isabel Torres in the Pico Isabel Torres National Park which dominates the entire city. We highly recommend this beautiful excursion. You can reach top by cable car and from there enjoy a stunning panoramic view over the whole of the bay of Puerto Plata.
Ron Brugal rum factory: Puerto Plata is also famous for its rum, and more specifically for the Ron Brugal factory, founded in 1888, and one of the country's oldest.
The Puerto Plata Amber Museum: One of the most important amber museums in the world, due to its proximity to the most significant and richest amber deposits in the world. These deposits have been put at around 26 million years old.
San Felipe fort and fortress: one of the America's first and the best preserved today. Built in the sixteenth century to defend the island from possible invasions, it is now an interesting museum which houses an exhibition of historical photographs, weapons and cannon used in the battles for independence.
Cathedral of San Felipe the Apostle and Independence Park.
The fishing village of Sosúa and its vast white sand bay surrounded by a great coral reef, is perfect for scuba diving, snorkelling and diving.
Cabarete: A haven for Windsurfing and Kitesurfing in the Caribbean.
