Legal Documentation


Your wedding will be one of the most memorable days of your life. So to ensure that your dream wedding runs smoothly, it is important that you have all of the correct legal documentation with you before you can walk down the aisle. Please see below for more information on what you will require.

Civil Weddings:

1. The following applies to Dominican nationals wishing to get married in the Dominican Republic.

  • Passports photocopies of the bride, groom & witnesses*
  • Legalized Photocopy and legalized translation of birth certificate
  • Translation and legalisation of the single status declaration**
  • Paperwork should not be more than 90 days old

* Please note that immediate family members cannot be witnesses.
** Legalization can be obtained at the nearest Dominican consulate in your country or through specialized agencies. It will also be necessary for those divorced and/or adoption

2. The following applies to non-Dominican nationals wishing to get married in the Dominican Republic:

Guests who have never been married before need the following documents:

  • Birth Certificate (Copy of original, translation into Spanish)
  • Notarized Declaration of Single Status
  • Name change document, if necessary (Copy of original, translation into Spanish and legalized by the Dominican Embassy or Consulate)
  • Copy of Couple’s Passports OR Drivers license
  • Copy of Witnesses’ Passports OR Drivers license (Copy of original only)

Guests who have been married before need the following documents:

  • Birth Certificate (Copy of original, translation into Spanish)
  • Notarized Declaration of Single Status
  • Divorce Judgment
  • Name change document, if necessary (Copy of original, translation into Spanish and legalized by the Dominican Embassy or Consulate)
  • Copy of Couple’s Passports OR Drivers license
  • Copy of Witnesses’ Passports OR Drivers license (Copy of original only)

3. The following applies to all Guests who are getting married:

  • The couple must bring all original documents.
  • All documents have to be translated into Spanish and legalized by the Dominican Consulate or Embassy in their home country, see chart above. (The Consulate or Embassy charges for these services).
  • The couple needs to be in the Dominican Republic 48 hours prior to the wedding date.
  • The Marriage Certificate will be issued with the name indicated on the Birth Certificate, unless a Name Changed document is provided.
  • In case of a prior marriage the divorce process has to be completed 10 months before the remarriage.
  • Relatives cannot be witnesses.
  • The Marriage Certificate will be sent through UPS to the couple’s mailing address.
Additional information/reminders
  • All required documents must be translated into Spanish and legalized by the Dominican Consulate in the country of origin. (There is a charge by the Dominican Consulate for this service.)
  • The couple must bring original documents in English.
  • Documents should be copied and then legalized. Please do not photo copy documents after they have been legalized.
  • Documents will not be returned; please do not bring only originals unless you have more.
  • Wedding reservation form to be sent to the hotel at least 1 month prior to your arrival date.
  • Any correspondence to Barceló Punta Cana regarding weddings must include the names of the bride and groom and the wedding date and time
  • Wedding location may be chosen upon arrival at the hotel.
  • Payment for the photographer/ videographer must be made in cash only.
  • Dress code for weddings: No nudity or bathing suits allowed.
  • Wedding passes are US$ 50.00 per person for guests from off the property and are valid for the ceremony and the dinner reception. This is not negotiable or commissionable. All passes are to be paid for before the day of the wedding. This pass allows 10 or fewer guests from off property to dine with the wedding couple. If there are more than 10 guests, you may have a private sit-down dinner from a set menu.
  • The Marriage Certificate in Spanish will be sent by UPS at a later date (latest 80 days after wedding) to the home address indicated, at the hotel's cost.
  • Failure to comply with any of the above will delay the processing of the marriage license application which may force us to reschedule or cancel the wedding.
  • Availability of Weddings: The hotel has the capability of organizing an average of 3 weddings per day. This is subject to the schedule of the Notary Public of the province of Higuey that means that the hotel cannot guarantee an allotment of number of weddings. The time of the wedding is also upon availability.
